Which sounds should my child say by now?

Children learn speech sounds over several years. Some sounds, like r, often come last.

Sounds come in stages

Sounds made with the lips, like p, b and m, often come early. Sounds that need more control of the tongue, like s, l and r, often come later.

A rough guide

  • Around 3: most people understand much of what your child says.

  • Around 4: most people understand almost everything.

  • School age: the last sounds, like r and th, settle.

When to ask

If your child is hard to understand for their age, or is frustrated about it, a free call is a good next step.
